We were delighted to welcome the talented illustrator Liz Million into school for a truly inspiring day of creativity and learning. The excitement was felt across the classrooms as children from every year group took part in engaging illustration workshops led by a real industry professional.

This special visit formed part of our commitment to providing enriching creative experiences that nurture confidence, self‑expression and individuality.

Learning From a Professional Illustrator

During the workshops, Liz guided pupils step by step through the process of drawing people and animals, sharing practical tips and techniques used by illustrators every day. The children were captivated as they discovered how simple shapes can be transformed into expressive characters and lively illustrations.

With expert encouragement and hands‑on support, pupils were eager to experiment, take creative risks and develop their artistic skills — producing some fantastic artwork along the way.

Exploring the Theme: “We Are Unique”

A key focus of the day was the powerful theme “We Are Unique.” Liz helped children reflect on what makes each person special and how individuality can be celebrated through art. This message closely aligns with our school’s Catholic values and our focus on nurturing self‑belief, respect and inclusivity.

The children loved seeing how different styles, ideas and interpretations were all equally valued, reinforcing that there is no “right” or “wrong” way to be creative.

An Inspiring Creative Journey

Alongside the practical workshops, Liz shared her own journey to becoming a professional illustrator, describing how her passion for drawing grew over time. Hearing first‑hand about her experiences helped pupils understand that creativity can lead to exciting careers and that perseverance and self‑confidence are key.

Many children left feeling inspired to continue drawing, creating stories and exploring their own artistic talents.

A Memorable Experience for Our School Community

This visit was a wonderful opportunity for pupils at St John the Evangelist Catholic Primary School in Billingham to learn from a creative role model and to experience the joy of art in a new and meaningful way.

We would like to say a huge thank you to Liz Million for an unforgettable day that truly sparked imagination and celebrated the creativity within every child.
