Curriculum Intent

At the heart of our Religious Education curriculum is the desire to nurture a deep and lasting relationship with God. Rooted in the teachings of Jesus, our Trust Virtues and Gospel Values and guided by the Magisterium of the Catholic Church, our intent is to inspire our pupils to know, understand and live out these values in their daily lives. We aim to develop spiritual, moral, cultural and theological understanding, forming individuals who are compassionate, reflective and committed to the common good. RE is not simply a subject; it is central to the mission and identity of our school and underpins the whole curriculum and wider life of our school community. Our hope is that children develop a well-formed conscience which enables them to make sound moral judgements and reflect on their choices and experiences.

Our Come and See curriculum enables pupils to:

  • encounter Christ through scripture, sacrament and prayer
  • understand the richness and depth of Catholic beliefs and practices
  • reflect critically on their own faith journey and those of others
  • engage with questions of meaning, purpose and truth in light of Catholic teaching
  • develop respect and understanding for people of other faiths and world views

Curriculum Implementation

We follow the guidance of the Bishops' Conference of England and Wales, meeting the requirement that 10% of the curriculum time is devoted to RE. We deliver the RE curriculum through a structured and coherent programme of study, Come and See, ensuring a progressive exploration of scripture, doctrine, liturgy and Catholic Social Teaching from EYFS through to Key Stage 2.

Key features of our implementation include:

  • Quality first teaching of RE by staff who receive regular training and spiritual development
  • A focus on scripture, doctrine and Church teachings presented in age-appropriate and engaging ways
  • A variety of learning experiences including discussion, reflection, writing, drama, art and music
  • Liturgical celebrations, collective worship and prayer life interwoven throughout the school day
  • Opportunities for pupils to engage with Catholic social teaching through charity, service and global awareness
  • A respectful approach to learning and other religions and worldviews, fostering dialogue and understanding

Curriculum Impact

Through our RE curriculum, we see pupils who are spiritually curious, morally grounded and actively living out the values of the Gospel. Pupils demonstrate a growing knowledge of their faith, confidence in expressing their beliefs and a genuine respect for others. They are reflective thinkers who can articulate their views on big questions of life and faith, showing empathy, compassion and a strong sense of justice.

The impact of RE is also evident in:

  • Outcomes in assessments and end-of-key-stage expectations in RE
  • Thoughtful contributions to class discussions, prayer and worship
  • Pupil involvement in charitable work and community action
  • Positive relationships and a deep sense of belonging to the school and wider Church community
  • Preparation for the responsibilities of life in a diverse and changing world, rooted in Gospel values

Fundamental British Values are evident in RE and children understand and articulate how RE can celebrate diversity. Our pupils have a sound knowledge of our Trust Virtues: Compassion and Justice, Honesty and Self-Belief, Respect and Responsibility and Confidence and Resilience. They can make links between these virtues and their personal lives.

Ultimately, we aim for all pupils to leave our school with a faith that is informed, lived and loved and able to make a difference in the world as witnesses to Christ's love.
