Curriculum Intent
At St John the Evangelist Catholic Academy, the intent of our PSHE and RSE curriculum is to nurture the development of the whole child, rooted in the teachings of the Gospel and the Catholic Church. We believe that every child is made in the image and likeness of God.
We aim to:
- Teach children that they are uniquely loved by God
- Promote healthy, respectful relationships grounded in love, dignity and service
- Foster resilience, confidence, emotional intelligence and a deep understanding of self-worth
- Ensure children are equipped to navigate modern life safely and with wisdom, rooted in the teachings of Christ.
Our curriculum fulfils the statutory requirements for Relationships and Health Education while remaining faithful to the moral and doctrinal teachings of the Catholic Church, in harmony with the guidance provided by the Catholic Education Service and our Diocesan Education Service.
We strive to ensure that PSHE and RSE:
- Are inclusive and reflect the diverse needs of all pupils
- Support children to develop resilience, character and emotional intelligence
- Promote a clear understanding of the virtues that help individuals to grow in love of God and neighbour
Curriculum Implementation
Our PSHE and RSE curriculum is delivered through a combination of discrete weekly lessons, cross-curricular links, enrichment activities, whole school initiatives and through daily witness to Gospel values.
The curriculum has been designed to provide opportunities for pupils to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding they need to grow into independent and respectful members of society, by addressing topics most relevant in this current climate.
Our PSHE and RSE provision is primarily delivered through the Ten:Ten “Life to the Full” programme, which provides a fully resourced and age-appropriate framework underpinned by Scripture, Catholic Social Teaching, and the Church's vision of human flourishing.
-
Curriculum Structure: “Life to the Full” is delivered from EYFS through to Year 6 in three core modules:
-
Created and Loved by God – teaching about identity, body, mind, soul, and emotions.
-
Created to Love Others – focusing on relationships, community, and family.
-
Created to Live in Community – promoting civic virtue, social justice, and the common good.
-
PHSE is supplemented with additional resources and programmes which provide our pupils with a coherent PHSE and RSE curriculum.
Curriculum Impact
The impact of our PHSE and RSE curriculum is evident in the personal development, behaviour and attitudes of our pupils. Through regular assessment, pupil voice and pastoral observations, we monitor the effectiveness of our provision and make adjustments to meet emerging needs.
Our pupils will:
- Understand and live out the Gospel values in their relationships and actions
- Develop healthy self-esteem, emotional literacy and the ability to make informed, moral choices
- Show respect and care for themselves and others, recognising the dignity and uniqueness of every person
- Be prepared for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life
- Contribute positively to society as informed, thoughtful and active citizens
Ultimately, our PHSE and RSE curriculum aims to form children who know they are loved by God, who can love and respect others and who are equipped to live out their vocation with integrity, joy and purpose.
